Thanks to the generous donation of one young woman from Gilbert, these little girls will have access to books twice a month through the “Books To The Bush” program. They will be enjoying the library experience and receiving phonetic training. Thank you to our precious donors for making these beautiful opportunities possible.
Lighting it up
Lighting it up Nils and his helper, David, are wiring the ware house. This 7500 sq. ft. building will serve many purposes including agricultural storage, shipment distribution, and construction storage and is also the welding shop. Other electrical projects include wiring men’s’ dorm #5, staff house #6, changing all campus light blubs to energy efficient CFLs and hooking up the water heaters in the staff houses.
Awards
Upon proving that they have memorized the first three sections of phonograms, the teachers were awarded padfolios and book bags with the Read ABC Liberia logo. Teachers who completed the fourth and final section of the phonograms were granted a full scholarship to the workshop. Thank you to those whose donations made this possible!!
Pondering the Potential
Samuel, an elementary school principal, is recognizing the caluable potential of the phonics tools that they are being given. It is evident that the 35 teachers are pondering, “How will I incorporate this into my classroom in the fall?”.
Typical Liberian Classroom
We had the privilege of visiting one of the area schools which consisted of four walls, a small window and a blackboard. There was no teacher’s desk and a few narrow benches with narrow tables attached. This makes us as teachers so grateful for the rooms and supplies made available to us in America.
Library Site Granted
This morning, shortly after breakfast Dr. Del Chinchen came to our front door with two guests. One of the guests was Dr. Emmanuel Dolo, the top Liberian manager of Mittal Steel Co. They own all of the land in this area, including the land that African Bible College sits on.
After a short proposal of the vision of Loving Through Literacy and it’s desire to build the first ever children’s library, he generously gave permission to build on one of their city center sites. He was thrilled with the concept and completely shared our hope to bring Yekepa to a higher standard of education, making it the learning capital of Liberia.
Africa Bound!
As you may know, we are leaving with a team of 9 people for west Africa this week. Among many projects, our two main goals are to:
1. Establish a literacy and phonics program through which students at ABCU will teach village children how to read, write, and speak appropriately.
2. Continue construction on a college gymnasium, communications building and college dorms.
Please pray for our team that we will be able to raise the last of the funds needed for travel expenses as well as supplies. We will be taking LOTS of luggage that needs to arrive safely in order for us to have a successful trip. If you have traveled before, you know our luggage will need prayer too!
Above all, please pray that we would be good stewards of the items and opportunities that we have been given, and that the message we have to offer will be well-received.
